The big difference between the 1850's Whigs and today's Democrats is that the 
Whigs had a material basis for their party in northern capital. What would be 
the material basis for a new party of splitters? Historically, the labor unions 
fulfilled this role, but these are too weak in the US. If the break consists of 
individuals favoring different policy proposals, how do you avoid recreating 
the Democratic Party?
