On 1 July, China’s /Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress/ entered
into force. Its purpose is to strengthen the /Zhonghua minzu/(“the
Chinese nation”) – a chauvinist term which claims that the Han Chinese
and the 55 ethnic minority groupsall belong to the “Chinese family” – by
forging “/a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation/". To
promote such “unity”, patriotism becomes the official duty of all citizens.
