More recently, there is another Bible story contained in the Israel's Proclamation of Independence, second paragraph: "Exiled from Palestine, the Jewish people remained faithful to it in all the countries of their dispersion, never ceasing to pray and hope for their return and restoration of their national freedom." That likely did not happen, either. I think mainstream historians such as Israel Finkelstein have written that there was no comprehensive deportation of the peasant/artisan population from Israel or Judea. Shlomo Sand claimed that the elite exile resulted in dispersed Jewish communities, from the Mountain Jews to the Roman Empire; the Jewish diaspora population grew from the original communities of elites who converted non-Jews outside of Israel and Judea. Sand draws on the well-documented fact that Judaism in the Hellenistic and Roman periods was an actively missionizing religion, which has mainstream acceptance based on records from non-Jewish historians of the time complaining about the conversions.
