I happened to refer to the Rosenberg case over coffee a couple of days ago to
illustrate the shift in class position of the Jewish diaspora and the effect
this had on its movement from support for Communism and internationalist left
wing working class politics in general to Zionism and increasingly reactionary
right wing politics. A CP’er in his mid-70’s had a vague recollection of the
Rosenbergs. But a woman from the West Bank in her mid-60’s whose father was a
founder of the Palestine CP and who had studied in Prague on a scholarship on
the eve of Vaclav Havel’s accession to its presidency, a retired anthropoly
professor who self-identified as a Marxist, and more understandably a younger
otherwise largely apolitical Palestine solidarity activist were all, to my
great surprise, wholly unfamiliar with their sacrifice. So the Atlantic article
is very welcome in reeducating a broad swath of the public - not only on the
left and also outside of the US where the publication is read.
