into an international campaign against Argentina. A diverse range of figures,
from musicians Rosalía and Patti Smith to actor Samuel L Jackson, former Greek
finance minister Yanis Varoufakis and writer and activist Etan Thomas, joined
the mass condemnation of Argentina's alleged exceptional racism. This was
amplified by social media and much of the Western press, both conservative and
progressive. Support for Argentina’s opponents was presented as an anti-racist
cause, with Argentine society reduced to a caricature of a white, xenophobic
and supremacist society.

Gabriel Vera Lopes spoke to Argentine socialist and Revista Jacobin
editor-in-chief Martín Mosquera to analyse the emotional and political origins
of the campaign, discuss the reality of racism in Argentina and question the
role played by some of the global progressive intelligentsia.
