If your work is your “passion”, you might want to consider moving to Uzbekistan, Senegal, or Mongolia where job satisfaction - euphemistically referred to as “employee engagement” - is highest, according to Gallup’s State of the Global Workforce 2026 annual report.
https://www.gallup.com/394373/indicator-employee-engagement.aspx?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email The statistics show little variation since Gallup began measuring the “emotional workplace” showing between 12% of global employees surveyed in 2009 and 20% today purported to be extremely satisfied and willing to work extra hours and to make other sacrifices on behalf of their organization. US workers reporting a high level of job satisfaction ranged from 27%-30% with a peak 34% over that period. What goes unrecognized and unreported by Gallup is that workers' extra effort is generally tied more to their job security and prospects for promotion and other rewards than to loyalty to their employer The minor variations in worker satisfaction since the Great Recession may seem trivial to us since as a whole the survey underscores that the great majority of workers take little pleasure in their jobs and are increasingly concerned about AI, but even the slightest change in the index is considered an important metric by their bosses . "Last year, low engagement cost the world economy approximately $10 trillion in lost productivity, or 9% of GDP.", Gallup reports. "Employee engagement measures the psychological attachment workers have to their work, their team and their employer. Gallup meta-analyses over the years have consistently shown a strong relationship between employee engagement and business-unit productivity, including profitability and sales.” The Pdf of the full report is attached.
