Caracas, August 5, 2026 (venezuelanalysis.com<https://venezuelanalysis.com/>) – Venezuelan grassroots movements have taken to the streets to oppose US control over the country’s resources and political affairs. On Tuesday, around 150 people gathered in Caracas’ Plaza El Venezolano in a demonstration organized<https://x.com/venanalysis/status/2084434828405981429/photo/1> by a coalition of leftist political groups, including Comunes, the Communist Party of Venezuela (PCV), and the League of Socialist Workers (LTS) ***** My comment: While it is good to see a public expression of anti-imperialist sentiment, the numbers at this rally were small. I suspect that this indicates a widespread feeling of powerlessness in the face of the overwhelming strength of US imperialism. On January 3 the US bombed Venezuela and kidnapped its president. The Venezuelan armed forces were unable to resist this attack. Unlike the Iranian government, which had spent decades preparing for a possible war with the US and Israel, the Venezuelan government had not taken the threat seriously enough. (A people's militia had been formed, but it was not prepared for the kind of attack that took place on January 3) In December and January, the US navy took control of 9 ships containing Venezelan oil exports, and stole the oil. This deprived the Venezuelan government of its main source of revenue. These attacks followed a decade of sanctions amounting to an economic blockade. Faced with this situation the Delcy Rodriguez government has made big concessions, both economic and political, to US imperialism. We can criticise these concessions, but for those living in the United States or its allies such as Australia, our most important task is to denounce US actions.
