The decay of social democracy in Venezuela September 3, 2026 (Published in Rizospastis, the organ of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), on 2 September 2026)
In light of the complete surrender of Venezuela’s natural resources to the USA through the agreement signed by the social democratic government of Interim President Delcy Rodríguez —who served as vice president under Nicolás Maduro, who is being held in the US following his abduction during the unacceptable imperialist military intervention by the US on 3 January — a bitter rift has emerged among officials of the Venezuelan Social Democratic Party. The open letter by Ernesto Espinosa, a radio producer and member of the ruling Social Democratic Party (PSUV), reflects the depth of the moral decay and compromise poisoning the consciousness of the people. When asked why the military was not ordered to resist during the US intervention, this unspeakable individual asserts the following: “President Nicolás Maduro sacrificed himself. Just as Salvador Allende chose in 1973 not to flee and to face death rather than see his people slaughtered, and just as Commander Hugo Chávez said in 1992 ‘for the time being’ to avoid a bloodbath, President Maduro made an equally heroic and painful decision: to allow his arrest so that Venezuela would not go up in flames.” And he continues: “What would have happened if the order had not been given because the Commander-in-Chief, knowing that we did not have the military strength to confront the empire, decided to surrender in order to save each and every one of those militiamen, every family, every child who is still alive today?” The anthem of compromise, submission, and avoiding battle —in all its glory. No one thought to ask the apologist for Venezuelan social democracy: if Maduro, as an example of self-sacrifice, decided to sacrifice himself and surrender to the Americans, supposedly to prevent bloodshed, why did he not inform the few dozen Venezuelans and Cuban internationalists who formed the last line of his security, so that they would not be killed?. Moreover, regarding the agreement with the US under which the country’s mineral wealth is handed over to them, he takes it even further. He describes it as a negotiation to “bring Maduro back”, adding cynically that “that’s how it works in kidnappings: the ransom is paid, the family member returns, and then the accounts are settled”, before concluding with the phrase that “politics is the art of the possible”. The role of social democracy throughout its history has always been disastrous.
