Dear Sigmundt John A Imani,
Whenever I come across thoughtful writings or works of art addressing the
complexities facing activist parents and their children, I imagine many in
our community will find these themes as fascinating as I do. That's why I
wrote a brief reflection in the RFC's fall newsletter on a recent book that
explores life as the child of radical activists of the Weather Underground.
Zayd Ayers Dohrn's memoir, *Dangerous, Dirty, Violent and* *Young*,
discusses his upbringing "underground," his love for his parents and the
hard questions he had about their choices. At the end of my review of
Zayd’s book, I mentioned that there is another book on a similar topic.
Harriet Clark's debut novel, *The Hill*, is modeled on her own experiences
with her mother, who served more than 35 years in prison. Clark's young
protagonist Suzanna regularly visits her mother "on the hill," where she's
serving a life sentence. Today, as promised, I share reflections on *The
Hill* in my latest blog
<https://www.rfc.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=9927&qid=3062951>.

Ayers Dohrn's memoir and Clark's novel resonate with me, particularly as I
think about what my father and uncle went through as the sons of Ethel and
Julius Rosenberg. Activist parents are often perceived as putting politics
before their love for their children—certainly my grandparents were accused
of that during their trial and sentencing—but often the opposite is true:
many activist parents within the RFC community talk about their love for
their children *driving* their activism and taking the risks that they take
in the hopes of contributing to a freer, more just and more livable future
for their children and the generations to come. That's not to say these
decisions are always simple or easy.

If you find these themes as rich for the parsing as I do, I encourage you
to read my blog <https://www.rfc.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=9927&qid=3062951>
and then find yourself copies of *The Hill* and *Dangerous, Dirty, Violent
and Young *to dive deeper on the subject. Happy reading!
