*Brazil: Electoral Punishment for Lula's "Progressive" Austerity – Both
in Votes and in High Absenteeism*

The defeat by almost two points that President Lula da Silva has just
suffered in the first electoral round constitutes an expression of the
growing anger of a sector of the population against the PT government's
“progressive” austerity. Flávio Bolsonaro obtained around 47% of the
valid votes, compared with Lula's 45%, forcing the presidency to be
decided in the October 25 runoff.
