Infocard works -- how?

I used Windows Cardspace to create a self-issued Infocard. Then I tried to
associate it with my local Mashup Server account. Cardspace reported "Windows
CardSpace encountered an error when verifying the identity of the site and
cannot continue. To close Windows CardSpace, click OK. To temporarily prevent
Windows CardSpace from starting, click Disable." and the Mashup Server says
"Could not add InfoCard to user profile."
We don't seem to have any meaningful reproducible documentation that explains
how I can get started with InfoCard, e.g. how to get an Infocard other than a
self-managed one, and what the benefits are over un/pw.
