I have an application that uses SSL for client certificates and Mason
under mod_perl. It seems like this isn't going to scale as well as I'd
hoped. The unit is not underpowered:

        Dual Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 2.40GHz (mostly 99% idle)
        2GB RAM

So my question is this (since I cannot find an SSL accelerator
applicance for < $2000):

1) Do I run a stripped down Apache to handle the SSL only and proxy that
to the mod_perl instance? On this or another box?

2) Do I get one of the SSL accelerator cards (the Broadcom cards can be
had for < $300)?

3) The system load is low, but the user time seems to be slower than I'd
expect; should I load VMWare server and run multiple instances sharing
the same disk?

4) Which book on tuning Apache [esp. for SSL] would you recommend?

TIA

John
