Ok, I take it back. Now I think it's Perl's fault again ;)

I was able to narrow it down to a fairly simple test case and I sent it to 
the p5p list for review. Maybe someone there will have an idea on how to 
work around the bug, and if not I'm hopeful it could be fixed in a future 
Perl release.
