I've used Apache::AuthCookie for the last couple of years.  It has  
worked great on several production sites that service thousands of  
users.

Apache::AuthCookie handles the authentication/session cookie, and I  
use my own code combined with Oracle to store the data.   
Apache::AuthCookie works well when you have multiple web servers with  
a load balancer.
