You are probably right Gareth, I have been working in a bit of a vacuum with
Mason, and having exclusive access to my server, I haven't had the luxury of
working with others.  I have only just joined the Mason Users, since, in the
past I have found most forums to be poor, however, the quality of help here
is really worthwhile.

Isn't strict localised to the module?
So a global mason variable has no effect upon the module's usage of the
variable,
you'd have to do something like our $var in the module and $Module::var =
1
in mason.
If it works then I'd say localised stdout should be easier.
