        Btw, these pieces of documentation that I keep referring to as "man" 
are things that come with Perl.  On a Unix machine they can be accessed by 
typing eg. "man perl" at the prompt.  I don't know how they're accessed from 
Windows, but they'll be there somewhere.

        The Unix man pages are traditionally cryptic; Perl breaks with this 
tradition by having readable man pages.  I first learned Perl by going through 
the man pages and reading the first 10 or so in the list.  At the time, this 
is the stuff that's now listed under "Reference Manual" on the "man perl" 
page.  I don't necessarily recommend doing things that way, but I certainly 
found that achieveable.
