No question. I was going about this all wrong, just like I thought. What I have ended up doing is what you broadly suggest, Ben, by just *using* js to show the relevant js-only part. I don't know how I got so turned around in my thinking, but instead of trying to set variables or post to the script or maintain state, all I really needed to do was an Ajax insertion into the form. If the user has js, it's all good. If not, fine.
I think this was a case of being way too close to the problem. Boy.
