I'm afraid I have no experience with fast cgi, but maybe this tiny nugget
will help you debug.

This message indicates that the "comp_root" that's being passed to Mason is
invalid, possibly an empty string or undefined (the value passed is printed
after "was given" and that is printing nothing). If you can trace through
and figure out where that goes bad, you may find the root of your problem.
