Yes, I tried the tcpdump... had a couple ARP packets and that was it.

Offlist, someone suggested the nic may have simply died in the transfer.

That turned out not to be the case, but it did get me thinking about
hardware problems. I had an IRQ conflict. Forgot to check that when I moved
the cards ffrom the dead 486 to the other one. Switched the card to IRQ 4
and now everything works.

Told you it would be simple in hindsight.

it looks ok. have you tried running tcpdump when you try the ping to
see what happens. it might tell you something useful. also use traceroute.
