The thing they neglect to mention is that the IP address of the machine who
is sending the file or initiating the chat is sent to the other person.
Therefore, this information is only useful for an intranet whose IP ranges
are public. Oddly enough, the Microsoft intranet is setup exactly this way.
Every computer at Microsoft has a publicly routable IP address.
For example, if you are in a masqed network with IP address 192.168.0.2 and
you attempt to send a file to someone, your machine effectively says, "I
want to send you a file. My IP address is 192.168.0.2 and I'm listening on
port 6891." Obviously this won't work unless the recipient is on the same
intranet.
