Just in case anyone else has a similar problem here's the scoop. Even though I
could ping all the interfaces on the server from all internal machines -
fowarding had stopped and I could not telnet to/from the server to any
internal machine. Turns out it was the interface card, after replacing it all
is good in the world (or at least in my network).
A rule of thumb - it's always the cable (or nic as the case may be)
