I have found an article at indyramp that states that somebody had similar problem and solved that by setting correct gateway IP address in internal network card using the IP address of external network card. As I use dial-up connection, my ppp0 address is different each time. I also don't understand why the output (in the format I copied to my first message) for ping from client goes to console on Linux box.
