I have just recently started having a similar problem.
I have a linux/95 network behind a linux gateway/firewall connected to the
i'net via isdn.
I've been masqing for a few weeks now, and everything was fine.
The last few days though, once the connection comes up, performance from the
win95/linux machines behind the firewall steadily degrades. If I reset the
isdn, the performance is fine for a few minutes, then drops like a rock.
ifconfig shows no drops/overruns/collisions for eth0 or ppp0. Oh, and I'm
also running squid proxy. I have the ip_masq_ftp module loades as well.
iptraf shows the connections as still being open, but doesn't show any
traffic going thru. The web browsers and ftp clients show the connection as
being stalled.
Oh, and my MTU/MRU are already set.
Any other ideas?
One more thing, my problem is indiscriminant. It is slow for all web pages.
(except for ones that are cached)
