I use Reflection X, which has two modes of operation. In one, it allows
Windows to manage the windows as if it were a "window manager", and thus
leads to the same behavior you describe above. In the other mode, it
creates a huge window that covers the screen, and lets you run an entire
X session inside that window. In this mode, KDE and other window
managers can be run without any glitches at all. That's the one I use.
Of course, Reflection X is kinda expensive, but I would guess that other
X servers may have similar options.
