You can only get a ping response if you enable ICMP masquerading. Did
you? Is forwarding turned on? Enabling FORWARD_IPV4 isn't enough. You
have to change something in one of the startup scripts; I can't remember
where.
Did you try a simple telnet through the gateway to see if that worked?
