I would think this is a hack at best.  I would think that Linux
should be able to do this automatically for either the specific
internal IP address or the subnet as a whole.

Ahhh.. a reason!  Excellent!  I'll add that to the new HOWTO.  Any 
news from the Linus prompt about getting this new patch set into
the mainstream kernel?
