I am seeing the exact same problem the Mitch is with my setup. I have a
2.0.33 Linux box doing IP Masq with Diald (working) handling the PPP link.
My clients consist of one PowerMac running Open Transport 1.3. I can ping
either box from the other. The Linux box works without problems (diald
does its thing if a connection is needed, nameservers work great, haven't
had problems reaching any outside addresses via FTP, HTTP, ping, etc.) If
I attempt to ping an outside address from the Mac, diald brings up the
connection and the ping will work IF AND ONLY IF I use the numeric IP
address (i.e., 144.92.9.22). Any attempts to use a name which requires the
DNS to resolve the address fails. I can also ping the nameserver I'm using
(same nameserver that the Linux box is using).

The only thing that doesn't work is DNS queries from the Mac. And here is
the kicker: when I use a DNS tool (WhateRoute) on the Mac and make a DNS
query, I can see the send data light on the modem light up (i.e., the linux
box has done its thing and sent the query out), but the receive light never
comes on.

All of this leads me to conclude that I've set up the routing incorrectly.
I've read the IPMasq Howto, the Net3 Howto, and various other Howtos, but I
must be unusually dense, because I just don't get it. This is very
frustrating. I mean, my network couldn't get any simpler than it is (two
machines, one doing the IP Masquerading), so you'd think that any person of
ordinary intelligence armed with the Howtos could figure this out. I used
a package called IPNetLink, which is currently in late alpha, on my Mac
which did IP Masquerading and had that working.
