Nowhere at all?  How many different sites did you try?
This sounds like the classic "MTU is not 1500" problem.

With the "MTU != 1500" problem, ftp won't work either.  That is, large
file transfers (incoming) fail in the same manner.

That suggests that something else is broken, but surely if you put
everything back the way it was, it would start working again, right? 
Maybe it was working fine because you weren't trying to go to the sites
that failed, back then..?

What is your MTU?
