Reducing your collision rate may well speed up your connection, by
reducing the amount of retransmits on your network.  But you didn't
really give any performance measurements.  A cable modem typically gives
performance up to 1 Megabit, whereas ethernet tops-out at 10 Megabits. 
If you are still getting your high throughput rates, despite the
collisions, then adding the extra NIC will only add extra security and
allow reduce network utilization; it may not speed things up very much.
