I think I can only offer you some encouragement that it "just works".
Up until recently (when I switched jobs), I had been using AltaVista VPN
software for a long time through a linux firewall without any difficulty
whatsoever.
I didn't have to do anything special. As far as I know, standard
masquerading works fine without any special configuration.
My firewall rules were pretty run-of-the-mill such as what you would
get off of any linux firewall web FAQ. (I am using ipfwadm, not ipchains.)
I hope that's enough encouragement to fight the good fight.
