I think there's a minor typo here - this should be a colon, not a semicolon:

export DISPLAY=<my.ip.address>:0-10

Presumably you could keep the linux X server as display 0 on port 6000,
and map 'virtual display 1' on port 6001 to the internal machines display 0
on port 6000, which would save some config work.
