You probably would have seen this had you checked WINIPCFG while in 95. It
would have told you what gateway it was using.

just a comment on setting up ipchains. many of you might know this
already, but i didn't, and it wasn't easy to find out, so i thought i'd
broadcast it.
i tried setting it up a few months ago and it just didn't work, so i
gave up and peripherally followed the masq@tiffany mailing list, never
really getting any ideas why it wasn't working.
so last night i dived back in to try to get it working, once and for
all, and i got it working after a couple of hours.
it turns out, masq'ing was working fine on the linux box (the HOWTO was
very clear, thanks!). but the win98 box didn't understand that the linux
box was to be the default gateway. this is despite the fact that i had
entered the linux's local IP address in the "default gateway" box in the
network control panel.
the problem? well, i really had two problems with my setup.
problem 1: if a win* (95 and 98, at least, not sure about NT) uses dhcp
to get its IP address, then it IGNORES THE DEFAULT GATEWAY entry in the
control panel. i finally noticed that the default gateway field was
blank in winipcfg, and that "route print" didn't show the gateway,
either. (doesn't this seem non-intuitive? :-)
okay, so i tried adding a "option routers 192.168.0.1;" line to the
dhcpd.conf file, so that the linux box's IP address would indeed be the
default gateway. then i did the "release" and "renew" on dhcp. no dice.
problem 2: if the dhcpd.conf file has this routers option added, it
won't take effect until you reboot the windows machine. huh.
so now it works.
should this special setup case be added to the "configuring Windows95"
section of the HOWTO?
