this is a excellent use for a 486,
if you are on cable, isdn, adsl etc.
your bandwidth will be your limiting factor
long before 486 CPU/bus speed becomes an issue.
Only problem is it'll be slow booting up.
hovever if you've got something like 100BaseT ethernet on both sides
then ofcourse you'd be better off with something faster in the middle.
