The only difference between the two was the address and IRQ. 5.1 recognized them immediately. I have not been able to get Linux to recognize most NE2000 cards regardless of the manufacturer. Maybe I can get 1 in 4 to work. I have had no problems with 3Com, SMC, or Intel. The NE2000 cards were from at least 4 companies and all worked perfectly with NT, W98, W95, Novell NetWare ( in a server), Win3.1, and DOS. In several books and HowTo files I have read warnings that NE2000 cards and Linux do not always get along. I have now just quit trying. When I install Linux I make sure the machine has a NIC that I know is compatible. I think this might still apply to the Ne2000 cards and clones. I've had hell with NOVELL Ne2000 cards. Like Charles mentioned, you might want to compiled the Ne2000 driver into the kernel then use the "append" command in /etc/lilo.conf. I have seen the same error with Ne2000s.
