Folks, I am a Linux newbie trying to make the most of some old machines.
I am currently running my ip masquerading server on a Mac II (works just
fine thank you) with a firewall based on Mr. Ranch's excellent
TrinityOS(tm).

I want to add dial-out capability; and since I have a couple of SE/30's,
I thought it best to distribute the work and also avoid the complexity
of having the main masquerading machine manage multiple firewall
configurations. I have installed Debian 2.1 on an SE/30; I am now trying
to figure out how to incorporate it into a network which currently has
an ip masqueraded cable modem. For both my work and my wife's work,
dial-in is the only way to access firm intranets.

The alternatives:
1. The MasqDialer package (url: http://cpwright.villagenet.com/mserver/
) allows you to install a server on a machine to share the modem
connection; there are Mac, Windows and Java clients to allow you to use
the server. I have succeed in getting MasqDialer to work--I have some
connection issues--but after I connect to the MasqDialer server from the
client (Mac O/S), I don't know where to go from there. I am a little
stymied by how this integrates with the computers on my network (the
documentation is limited).

2. The other option is diald, for which there is more information.

However, I have the same question as to configuration of either
solution:

Do I have to add the SE/30 as a gateway to my masq'd machines'
configuration? or do I create a whole new set-up for TCP on each
machine? This is a less satisfactory solution, in that you have to
reboot a masqueraded PC to switch --but otherwise, how does the computer
"know" to (a) cause the SE/30 to dial out or (b) use that connection
rather than the cable modem's? I would like to think that a masqueraded
machine can take advantage of both the cable and modem-dial out
connections, but I am having conceptual difficulties in seeing how this
is accomplished with either solution.

I would appreciate any guidance as to how to accomplish the goal of a
dual-out IP masquerading solution, as well as comments on the software
alternatives.
