On the speed question, I have seen no slowdown, running from a
Windows host through a masq connection, vs Dialup Networking.
It may even be faster, because the Linux tcp/ip stack may be more
efficient (and it's surely better-written!) than Microsoft's, but I really
can't prove it. Obviously, if there are multiple machines, you share
bandwidth; unless several systems are ftp'ing big files, you
shouldn't notice anything. Internet speed is dependent on so many
variables, starting at the server end, any speed problems through
the masq box aren't noticeable. (This assumes a reasonably small
private network -- there are some limits.)

There are some specialized applications, Microsoft NetMeeting
comes to mind, that simply don't work, for various technical
reasons. These are few and far-between. Others have required
special masq modules. Some games have problems with multiple
players behind a masq firewall. I suspect that many of these
problems exist with other firewalls -- I have limited experience with
the others.

On setting it up, get a reasonably modern Linux distribution, and
get it running first. Then, get your connection running to your ISP,
so you know you can communicate. Then, you are ready to make
a masq firewall. I call your attention to the masquerade how-to and
to David Ranch's TrinityOS document, both of which are mentioned
frequently on this list. Make a simple firewall first, a one-liner
ipchains command. (I don't have the syntax handy; you should
see it mentioned at least once a day on this list....)

Hang out here on this list, paying attention to the gurus who really
know this stuff, Fuzzy Fox, Wm Stearns, Dave Ranch, etc.
Through them, you can get a better idea how ipchains works, and
build a stronger firewall. It takes a while to learn this stuff, and you
need to know how tcp works to build a really tight firewall.

Good luck. We're happy to help.
