The PIX intervenes at the HTTP layer.  When you make the first web
request, it adds the headers in to force your browser to pop up the
username/password dialogue.

The PIX rocks.  Still learning the ins and outs of it, but when you
compare it to FW-1, it's got way more bang for the buck.
