I have been experiencing some problems with IP masquerading. My ISP has a 6
hour time limit per connection. After this time they disconnect you and
allow you to reconnect. I irc a lot and always have a client connected.
But when I'm disconnected programs like ftp and bitchx don't realize that
the gateway was disconnected from the internet. The programs think they are
still connected to the servers. After the ppp link is re-established with a
new IP address the connections still don't timeout or disconnect on their
own. Actually I doubt they will ever timeout. I'm not sure where exactly the
problem is but it has to do with the gateway not telling the clients the
connections have been dropped. I have gone over my firewall ruleset and
havent seen any problems. I am not blocking any icmp packets. I hope that
someone on this list can help me figure out why these programs are acting
like this.

Thanks
