You probably did build a kernel, but your system is probably still
booting the previous kernel instead. You should check your LILO
configuration, and see if the install process you're using (I have no
idea what it might be; for me, it's "make zlilo") is actually putting
the kernel in a place where LILO can find it, and that you're actually
running the "lilo" command to locate and setup boot information for the
new kernel version.
