I doubt the module issue would cause these problems for you.

Don't mess with /proc unless you really know what you are doing.

So, it sounds like you can ping and ping thru the MASQ firewall 
as long as you want.  But, once you stop it and restart it, 
it won't work anymore.  true?

If so, it sounds like either something is very hosed in your
firewall ruleset, the /proc ip_forward tag is being toggled
off, or there is some weird timeout going on.

Go back in your setup and make sure you aren't doing anything
fancy.  Use the basic setup in the MASQ howto and see if that
helps.  Also.. maybe installing a new copy of the old kernel 
or installing a new one might help too.
