There is a good Howto for compiling the kernel /usr/doc/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.gz.
To read it use 'zless /usr/doc/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.gz'.

There is one thing with RedHat 5.0 is in /etc/sysconfig/network there you
have a option FORWARD_IPV4 this is default false it has to be TRUE.

The ipfwadm examples in the masq-howto shoud work ok.
