Hi... I've got a few questions about IP Masquerading. First, my setup:
We've got a mediaone cablemodem. A pentium 166mmx is the gateway, with
two ethernet cards. It was originally running kernel 2.1.90. I could not
get dhcpcd to work on 2.1.90, but I could manually configure the ethernet
with the proper IP and communicate with the local network and the world.
With the ethernet devices manually configured, I could not get the
forwarding working properly (probably because of the new chains stuff) I
tried upgrading the kernel to 2.1.102, dhcpcd was still no-good. I backed
the whole thing down to 2.0.34pre14, and everything works great (dhcpcd
and ipfwadm) My first question is how can I get it all working on the 2.1
kernels? First I need to get dhcpcd working, from there I can probably
figure out the chains stuff.
My second problem is a little strange. Behind the gateway we have two
computers. Both are power macs, one is running macos, the other is
running linux-ppc. I am using the linuxppc box, and I'm having some
troubles. I don't think the macos box is showing the same problems, but
its usage is very different, so that could explain it. What happens is
that idle connections that go across the gateway will close. If I telnet
or ssh from the linuxppc machine to a host on the internet, and then go
idle for about 10-15 minutes, the connection will drop. I've eliminated a
couple things: if I telnet to the gateway and sit idle, the connection is
fine. If I telnet from the gateway to a remote host, the connection is
fine. Its only when I go across the gateway. Its almost as if the
gateway "forgets" about the open connection that its supposed to be
forwarding.
I am fairly familiar with the workings of TCP/IP, so if anyone needs a
tcpdump or any more information, please ask. I'm pretty much baffled.
Thanks,
Scott
