Nope - I had this set up before - I have the line:
echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
in my rc.local files. I checked to make sure it's not getting whacked and
it's not.
This gets stranger and stranger - now I can start a tcp/ip client on one of
the remote machines and it will cause diald to make a ppp connection. I
still can't do anything useful from the remote machines but the Linux box
works fine.
I'm almost there, I just need to get over this one last hurdle...
