I had this same problem until I made sure the mtu/mru for ppp0 was
identical to eth0 (1500). Try changing your call to /usr/sbin/pppd (in
/etc/ppp/scripts/ppp-on at least on RH 5.0) to have "mtu 1500 mru 1500"
instead of 552, or whatever the default may be.
