NNTP is just a simple TCP connection, just like any other simple
protocol (SMTP, HTTP, etc.).  You should not have to do anything to make
it start working.

You mention posting, as if reading news were no problem.  Is this the
case?  You can read newsgroups just fine, but things only break down if
you try to post?
