Would it be possible for the forwarding machine, when it forwards over
it's own MTU/MRU 296 PPP link, and it gets something like: <mss 1460>
to adjust this request to, say, <mss 256> to get around the path-MTU bugs
in the intermediate whatever?  I understand that the real problem is the
servers and routers (whatever) on the other end, that fail to properly do
the path MTU discovery.  But, couldn't the masquerading forwarder reduce
it in the first place?  -Tom
