If the forwarding could change the client's reported max size in the first
place to match the smaller size, I think, that is the only approach that
will help.  The machine on the end of the eth0 says <1460>, if the
forwarder could change it, (knowing that the PPP's MTU is 296) to <256>,
then it wouldn't have to rely on the (broken) path mtu discovery.
