What baud rate are you setting on your PPP link?  If it's 19200 baud,
you are severely limiting your transfer speed.

I recommend setting the baud rate to 38400, then using setserial to
enable the "spd_hi" or "spd_vhi" setting.  Read the setserial man page
for more info.

Someone on this list pointed me to a cabling FAQ that pointed out that
all my cables had been wired incorrectly.  I decided to save money by
building my own cables, and I did it completely wrong.  It makes a big
difference which strands get wired to which pins.  Of course, if you
bought all your cables at the store, they should be okay.

A 10Mb network means that at optimum efficiency, it should be able to
transfer 10 million bits per second.  That's about 1 megabyte per
second, so your 800 K/s rate is pretty good.  Your 200 K/s rate is way
off.  If you get anything above 500 K/s, you're probably doing alright.
