EuroCableLabs Receives DVB/DAVIC-Compliant Proposals from Ten Vendors
=============================================================
In response to a RFP for a cable modem system issued by EuroCableLabs, ten
of nineteen vendors responded with a DVB/DAVIC-compliant proposal, meeting
the organization's specification. The vendors include:

*Alcatel/SEL - http://www.alcatel.com
*COCOM - http://www.cocom.dk
*ECI-Telecom - http://www.ecitele.com
*Elsa - http://www.elsa.de
*Hughes Network Systems - http://www.hns.com

*Nokia - http://www.nokia.com
*Philips - http://www.philips.com
*Simac - http://www.simac.be
*Thomson - http://www.thomson-multimedia.com

EuroCableLabs has provided the following notes on its efforts:

"(The) first cable modem systems will be commercially available this year
(4Q98). The in-band principle is supported by cable modems and the
out-of-band principle is supported by set-top boxes in most cases.
However, the INAs are generally designed in such a way that they can
handle both principles. It shall be possible to operate in-band
services as well as out-of-band services within one network. The
interface of internal cable modems is PCI. Stand-alone cable modems
often have Ethernet interfaces. In the future USB and IEEE 1394 will
also be available. Manufacturers of set-top boxes frequently mentioned
that PC interfaces like USB will also be submitted by their set-top
boxes."

OSS to Become Cable ISP
=====================
Online System Services has announced that it will be expanding its services
beyond value-added reselling by offering cable ISP services through revenue
sharing agreements with cable ops. The OSS announcement did not indicate
that operators would have a no cost entry comparable to models offered by
MediaCity, HSA, and Internet Ventures. However, the company reported that
its new model would sharply reduce the initial investment.

OSS already offers a content package to its VAR customers known as i2u.
Unlike packages offered by rival cable ISPs, the content provides operators
with multiple revenue opportunities through the use of customized software
designed to optimize funds via online ads, sponsorship fees, advanced
electronic commerce applications and creation of MUDs or virtual private
online communities.
