'Make zlilo' or 'make bzlilo' will overwrite (and backup) automatically. 
So what I did was write lilo.conf to offer an option to boot off the
vmlinuz.old and just for good measure (because 'make zlilo' might be
called a second time before you check whether it works), I chose a
favorite old kernel and saved that as /vmliuz.safe and set that as a
boot option. It has kept me out of trouble more than once.
